Walks & Hiking Opportunities

The Iron Snowshoe Trail crosses our driveway by the stop sign, beyond the gate. It is closed to motored vehicles in the summer and fall. The beginning section is a nice walk.

Very low vehicle traffic makes a stroll down Peshtigo River Lane a nice after dinner walk. Go out the door and turn left at the stop sign. It's flat and easy terrain. Or drive up to the top of Peshtigo River Lane, cross over Parkway, and head to the very top of the hill. Here you can park at the edge of the Caldron Falls Reservoir and stroll out onto the top of the Caldron Falls Dam. It's a little unnerving!

Thunder Mountain rises 360 feet above the wetlands at its base; it is the highest point in Marinette County. It has mowed trails and is a good place for an easy hike. Nearby Thunder Mountain Inn is a good place to stop afterwards for refreshments. Left on Parkway, and in about 6 miles, turn right on Thunder Mountain Road.

The Governor Thompson State Park is 2,800 acres approximately 15 miles northwest of Crivitz. It is open year round from 6:00 am to 8:00 pm. They have a 150 foot sand beach, a boat launch for non-motorized boats in the Caldron Falls, over 16 miles of hiking trails, fishing, canoeing, kayaking, bike riding, etc. See the map at the back of this booklet. Left on Parkway, Right onto Ranch Road, Left on Paust Lane. 10 minute ride.

The Peshtigo River State Forest comprises 12,400 acres in Marinette and Oconto counties on the Peshtigo River. It has 25 miles of river, 3,000 acres of flowage and 15 boat landings. There is 10 miles of hiking and cross country skiing and 25 miles of snowmobile trails. See the 2-page map/brochure at the back of the booklet.
