Things To Do, Places To Go

Fishing

WHAT CAN YOU CATCH?

The Peshtigo River is a great place to catch large numbers of migrating walleye. The size of these fish are impressive (the largest one weighing in at over 10 pounds and measuring over 30 inches), and the best time to catch them is spring.

The Caldron Falls Reservoir (1,018 acres) and The High Falls Reservoir (1,498 acres) are great for muskellunge fish. The density of musky is higher in Caldron Falls, but fish in the upper 40-inch range are found in both areas. Caldron Falls has four boat landings and does not permit boats on the water over night, so there are no personal piers on the water – making it a less frequented body of water. Current regulations are 40-inch minimum length/1 fish per day.

Right here in front of the condos is a great place to fish when the Hydro-Electric dam upstream reduces water flow in the morning and late afternoon. The river then has a glass-like surface. Plenty of crappie, pike and the occasional musky and small mouth bass have been caught right here.

In Lake Noquebay (2,398 acres), just northeast of Crivitz, big bluegill, pumpkinseed, crappie, and perch are abundant. A 2014 survey reported numerous bluegill over 8 inches and crappie over 10 inches. Current regulations include a 25 total limit. For access, there is a boat ramp on the northwest side of the lake from either Boat Landing Road or Lake Noquebay County Park.

Thunder Lake (135 acres) is a great place to catch rainbow trout. Before opening weekend, the first Saturday in May, 5,000 rainbow trout are stocked. The south Branch Pemebonwon, North Branch Pemebonwon, Upper Middle Inlet, KC Creek and North Fork Thunder River all have good brook trout populations. Access is granted to each of these places from road/stream crossings.

In the Upper Scott Flowage of Marinette County (586 acres) there is a good population of largemouth and smallmouth bass. The lower portion of the habitat contains an abundance of largemouth bass and the upper portion contains smallmouth. Access through the Cox Landing- Highway 180 north of Marinette/Menominee Area.

FISHING LICENSE INFORMATION

Residents and non-residents, 15 and under, do not need a license and may fish free every day. Children 15 and under do not need to be accompanied by a licensed adult to fish. If an adult is helping a child cast or reel in, they are deemed to be fishing and thus need a fishing license. Licensed anglers may not have more than three hooks, baits, or lures in the water. Anglers born before 1927, and active duty military on furlough/leave who are Wisconsin residents do not need a license.

There are many fishing license options at a variety of affordable price-points, such as: A first time, adult resident license, is $5.00. Junior (16 – 17) and Senior license is $7.00. A resident annual fishing license is $20.00. A two-day inland license is $14.00. A non-resident 4-day license is $24.00.

DNR does have a presence on the water. We do not suggest fishing without a license. The fees collected help pay for re-stocking and other environmental efforts.
